Get Well Soon, Jose!

Jose,

You were off to your best start ever this year, and then your body broke down... again.  I know how frustrating this must be for you, but I also know that I speak for thousands of your fans when I say I'm looking forward to your return.  You've overcome so much in the past - I know you can do it again!   After hearing you talk about considering retirement, all of us Canseco fans wanted to make sure you know how much we want to see you play again.  Here are some "Get Well" wishes from some of your supporters and lifelong fans...

Take care of yourself, Jose.  We'll be waiting.

When I heard that you were going to be out for at least four weeks, I was quite dissapointed. I know that if you would have stayed healthy you could have hit over 60 homers. Get well soon and give it another shot next year. And remember, you only need 72 more homers to reach 500.

We're very sad that you are going to have to endure another long stint on the
DL. It's especially disappointing because it comes during your most
productive pre-allstar season. A sure shot at 50 HRs and an outside chance
at 60 HRs have been taken out of your sights. Please heal quickly, work hard
to return as early as you can without too much risk, and keep your chin up.
We Canseco fans need you out there. The game is not as exciting without you.
I hope the baseball gods will leave you alone and let you crack 600 HRs.

yoou can not get down in this hard moment you just have to put all you strength (and you have a lot) to get over this, everybody knows that you have the potencial to hit 50 or 60 homers but i want you to shows to the world what Jose Canseco can do and i know thats what you want.

finally you can not get depress on this moment this is the very best way to the people what Jose Canseco can do and work like never to get back you have a lot to give to the game and i dont want to see the end of a brilliant carrier and just say he could be, i want the people say he is.

I hope your recovery goes as well as possible. You are blessed in
many ways. How often does someone get 6 weeks vacation during their work
season? Just take it easy for a while and don't worry about anything. Just
concentrate on your recovery and come back whenever you feel like it. Thanks
so much for hitting a homer and throwing a guy out at second when you played
the Braves on June 7. My brother and I were so excited to see you hit a homer
in person. It was great! Anyway, keep faith in God and in yourself and you
will be just fine. Best wishes to you and your familly. You are in our

Dear Jose,
For the past 14 years Jose, you simply have been my hero. Since I was 7 years
old, I new who my two role models in life would be, yourself and my father.
I have followed your career basically from day one, and I have enjoyed the
many highlights you have provided us all thus far in your career. Now I
realize that right now is a trying time in your life, but I am confident that
you will come back, better than ever.......you always do. The one thing that
has always been a constant throughout your career, other than remarkable
power, is your ability to overcome adversity. You have come so far in your
career, and I am sure all of us at Canseconet, can't wait to see you launch
homerun #500. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery and I hope to see
you back in the lineup in 1999. The race to 500 is on, and you are in the
driver's seat.

Ugggg, what an ugly word - "retirement"! It doesn't suit you Jose. Not
at this age, especially. You're a great player, one of the best in the
league. Yes, I know, "when you're healthy". I undertsand that it must be
your decision and that the injuries are physically and mentally
difficult to deal with. I just wanted to let you know that you have
legions of fans supporting you. I almost cried when I read the news that
you're considering retirement. I know it has to come some day, but not
yet I pray! Please give it another shot. Don't hang 'em up yet! Don't
rush your return, make sure you're 100% ready to go before coming back.
Get well soon and I hope to see you playing next season!

Hey Jose,
Sorry about the back and everything, but the best thing for you to do right
now is (1) to rest, and (2)(and most importantly)not to give up on yourself.
I heard from ESPN radio tonight that you were very frustrated and even
thinking of RETIREMENT!?!?!? Seriously, just look at what type of season
you were having...and you're thinking of retirement? Jose, you have a
special talent, and retiring will only leave the millions of fans out there
waiting to see you launch homerun after homerun heartbroken and dissapointed
that there would be no more Jose Canseco as we know you. You are one of, if
not the most entertaining player I have ever seen play baseball. Your grace
with the bat and longball ability is matched by few others and you will go
down in history as one of the best baseball players to ever play the game.
Jose I hope that your recovery is quick (but relaxing)....and to always
remember (seriously) NOT TO EVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF!!!!!!!! We, as well as
the many other Canseco fans I'm sure around the world, wish the best in
recovery and hope to once again see out there on the diamond.

I hope your recovery from surgery continues to go well. I send along
my best wishes for a healthy, full, and speedy recovery from this
latest setback. I read today that you are contemplating retirement.
I hope that you will consider rehabbing and returning to baseball if
at all possible. I have enjoyed watching you play baseball ever since
you burst onto the scene here in Huntsville, AL, destroying Southern
League pitching on your march to Oakland. Major League Baseball
definitely will not be the same if you decide to retire. Thank you
for the many wonderful memories you have given me over the past 15

and whatever your body will allow, I wish you the best of luck in all
things throughout the rest of your life.

Please don't give in to this setback, Jose... if you read what I sent you
this year, you'll understand why it happened. You can't let it beat you...
you deserve all of the good things that have happened to you this year, and
don't ever doubt that. It's hard to stand back and look at this
objectively, but things happen for a reason... and maybe, if you understand
where the real pain is coming from, this could be the final time you have
to worry about your back... don't give up, Jose... get angry, and fight
back.. you have the talent, and the determination.. all you need is the
support, and the All-Star vote proved that your fans still respect and love
you... playing in the game never mattered, neither did proving anything in
the Home Run Derby... just having that fan vote was what counted.. I hope
you have alot of friends and family who can be there to help you. And
remember the most important reason you have to beat this, and break free of
the pain.. it's not to pick up a bat... it's to pick up your daughter.. if
you need the reason to fight...she's right there.

This is Jenny Smith. I hope that you remember me. I came to see you on
Camera Day last year at the SkyDome. I was the young lady in the
motorized wheelchair trying to get pictures of your and the rest of the
Jays.

I had the worst time as you know. What you don't know is that the
picture I took of you did not turn out. I can't even tell that it is
you sitting on the bench.

I am also the girl that you sent one of your used bats to. You
autographed it for me and sent me a nice hanwritten note with it.

My father and I were at the game at SkyDome on July 4th when you played
against the Jays. I was very impressed by your homerun that you hit
against Pat Hentgen. I was wearing a shirt with your name on it and I
was going to have my father go down to you and ask you to sign it for
me. He could not do that so I was just happy to see you.

I know what you are going through Jose. I have had so many back
surgeries it's not funny. I have Spina Bifida which affects my spine
and my legs. In other words, I can't walk. That is why you saw me in
the wheelchair last year.

Anyway, I hope that you go back to playing the game that you love and
you DON'T think of retiring. You are my favourite player Jose and I
would hate to see one of the greatest players quit because of injuries.

I can't TELL YOU how upset I've been since I heard about your surgery. I

many times and have many autographs from you. In fact, I think you
actually RECOGNIZE ME at A's games now! I always seem to get your

One thing for sure, you have a huge following, myself and all the fans on
canseconet.com wish you the very best this year and always!! You have your
lovely daughter to share your time at home with, and I'm sure her bright
eyes and big smile will help some of that depression and pain. I'm also
sure you will be her example of a positive thinking Dad...she will forever
look up to you, and although she is very young, you will have articles,

etc., what a setback it was, but how you moved on...

I will continue to pray and think positive for you and your family, Jose.

Jose I was keeping track of you and your homeruns even though Im a Yankee
Fan. I feel bad for you cause I had back surgery and I know what a let down
it is so hang in there. I know its especially hard for you this time since
you were bashing some mighty homers.I had my back fixed then I got in a head
on car crash and had to have 3 discs removed from my neck. While I was home
this summer recuperating you were my strength hitting all those homers.Get
well soon. These back problems are for life I guess so I will find away to
cope so I know you can. Bob Heck

I really hope that you come back. I know you are depressed, but We are
depressed too! I can't explain it, but it seems that every time you hit
a HR or do something great, I seem to have a great day, and nobody can
take that away from me. I won't even watch the allsar game this
year...there is no point...you are not there. I was planning a trip to
Tampa bay the last week of august just to see you...I had reservations,
and canceled them. But I will still be in florida...I just can't go see
the Drays without you. I'm 22 now, and have watched you since I was
10. You are my hero, and I defend your name every time someone tries to

Hey Jose,

I sincerely hope you do not choose to retire. You have been my favorite player since '88. Every night I tune into sportsdesk just to see if you have hit another homerun. It would be very disappointing to see such a great player leave the game.

Get well soon.

know you would have swept everyone in the homerun derby last night. But
unfortunately you had back surgery which sucks. Now we can't show Sammy

well soon. And hopefully next season you can stay healthy and hit them
homers. Get well Jose!

Jose,
I've been a big fan of yours ever since u came into the league in 86.
i have all your baseball cards and all the "canseco albums" that u had. i
dont think there is anyone in baseball that had as much potential as u had,
and its a shame that injuries have deterred ur progress as one of the game's
best.
Nevertheless, with all the disadvantages u've had, u've still
maintained your status as a franchise player and one of the most feared
hitters in all of baseball...and any major league pitcher will definitely
verify that.
I was looking forward to seeing u at the all-star game...last time i
saw u was at yankee stadium 2 years ago i believe on ur birthday when u were
with boston. i had a sign for u and everything, but i dont think u saw it.
i was behind home plate...and even got stuff thrown at for it, haha.
Well, get well soon, i sure hope u come back to play and we'll miss
you. You're an all-star no matter what.

Unbelievable. Thats the only word that can describe how i feel right now.
My family and i went to Florida last week and attended the July 6th game
against Boston. We had seats in the 3rd row down the right field line. When
you came out my uncle yelled your name and i held up my sign that said I
came 1200 miles just to see Jose play and you looked right at me and kinda
nodded and smiled. That was the greatest feeling i ever had. You went 0-4
that night but it didn't matter to me because i got to see my hero. Two
night later we came back to another game and in your second at bat you hit
a 414 foot homerun, your 31st and hopefully not last of the season. Seeing
you hit a homerun was as good of feeling as you seeing my sign.
I just want to tell you that I hope you get well soon and get back to
playing the game that you love. Watching baseball won't be the same for me
until you come back.
Your
pal,
Brent

I am very sorry to hear about your back problems. I hope you get well soon so that you can get back out there and continue your march to the Hall of Fame. George Brett will be inducted this year, and he too had a career filled with injuries. It is the unwillingness to quit and determination to keep coming back that makes guys like you and George special. I know you have done it numerous times before, and it must get harder every time to motivate yourself to get back out there and rebuild your body. You have such a gift, I hope that you are able to make a full and speedy recovery. There are a lot of people rooting for you, and I am one of them. Thank you for what you have given baseball fans. Dear Jose,
just a note to let you know you're in my prayers. There is nothing I alone
can say to make this any easier for you, but I hope it helps in some way to
know how many loyal fans you have pulling for your swift and complete
recovery. I know how it feels to me each time when I feel I am finally
reaching my potential, only to have yet another thing placed in my way. I
tend to first think "This doesn't surprise me." Then something inside refuses
to accept it, and I get up, dust myself off, and give it my best go once
again. All that getting up and dusting off gets tiring at times, but it's
better than the alternative. I say all that to say this; You have proved
repeatedly, to yourself and others, that you can bounce back from almost
anything. Only you know what you are capable of health wise, but somehow I
can see you in the future, standing at the plate, taking that monster swing,
and trotting around the bases as only you can do. Even when we believe in
ourselves, its nice to know others believe in us too. For the record, I
believe in you.

Hi jose,

My name is John Orofino from Los Angeles, California. I feel real bad
about your recent set back. It's only a set back, and not a serious one.
It only takes you out hitting at least 50 home runs or more. I still believe
in you and love watching you hit, and it doesn't matter if your used only as
a DH. Hope you really get well, and stay focused on your return to the
lineup. Once you do return back in the lineup, you can start having fun
again. Bye.

P.S. - Your still my favorite among the other home run hitters in the
game today.

happens to stop you. I can hardly imagine the frustration that you must be

remove a bone as the swelling in my shoulder has become so bad, that my
bicep muscle ripped loose from my shoulder. They're going to remove the
bone to make room for the swelling and keep my rotator cuff from ripping
loose next. Living in PA I don't get alot of news here regarding your

Greetings from Toronto, Canada!

I'm 34 years old (male) and I saw my first live baseball game on July
2, 1999 (your birthday).

I saw you hit a great homerun. How exciting that was!
I went for my second game on July 4, 1999 and what did you do? Yet
another homerun. I must be your lucky charm!! (just kidding)

Now I'm hearing that you might retire? Dude, I need to see you hit
just one more homerun, please. I will always respect your decisions.
If you retire, I can deal with that.

Anyway, I hope you recover 150%. I, selfishly, would like to see you
play one more solid and injury-free season - just to show the world how
great you really are.

By the way, on your birthday, my friend Joanne sent you a birthday
card. We delivered it to the Dome just before the game on July 2,
1999. Hope you liked it.

Jose, take your time healing. You have tons of fans that want to see
you get better.

The All-Star Game sucked without you. But as thrilling as it would have been to
see you take your place on the field with the baseball greats, past and present,

When I was yonger, you (Jose) came to Atlanta (Castlegate Hotel) to sign autograph. My step-father took me to see you. I had my '86 Donruss rockie card with me that my father had purchesed for my birthday. When I got to you you were handed the card by someone next to you and you said to that guy that you had been waiting to see that one. I couldn't say anything, I was right in front of Jose Canseco. My step-father teased me about it on the way home and said that you were not even that great a player. I told him he was wrong someday you were going to hit 500 homeruns and would go to the Hall of Fame like Reggie Jackson, his favorite. I reminded him of it this year when you reached 400. He said that he was happy for me considering I took a lot abuse still wearing my old jerseys and stuff years after your last great season when you and hit 44 homers. I felt very gratefull that my choice in favorites was going to be imortalized in Cooperstown. Well when you got hurt I said well !
that is bad, and I was sad of course but knew you would be back. Then I read the other day in the paper that you might consider retirement. I almost cried, you would shut up all of the people that said you were washed up, if you made it, even if it took you playing half a year, every year to get there, you would be in the Baseball Hall Of Fame. That is the greatest acheavement in all of sports. Hold of retirement, don't let those people be right.

Dear Jose:

My best friend, Carol Secor, has been a fan of yours for over 10 years. She
is a loyal fan who has supported you no matter what team you are on. When
you were traded in 1992 it was quite a sad time, but you showed that being a
person of grace and character pays off.

I confess I was not always a fan, mostly because I'm a devoted Terry (the
best behind the plate) Steinbach fan. However, when Carol's mom was dying
from cancer 6 years ago you sent her an autographed photo and note. Only a
special person would do that. You also took pictures with Oakland fans on
picture day in 1997 when Mark McGuire was to high and mighty to do so.

You sir deserve kudos for surviving the abuse of the press and comments on
everything from your marriage to your cars. I. for one, have had quite
enough. Besides, you look so good in your uniform it is a crime that you
aren't a male model.

Anyone who survived Tony (I won't let them have dinner) LaRussa can bounce
back from surgery and the set backs of life. No matter what happens you have
many, many fans who are there for you.

And so I leave you with some thought provoking advice:
You're gonna win some
You're gonna loose some
And some are gonna be rained out!

Get Well Soon and for super laughs go see "Austin Powers two - The spy Who
Shagged Me !"

Jose,
I just want to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you
as you recover from your surgery. It was a shame that this injury had to
happen when you were off to your best season ever, but sometimes life throws
us some wicked curves. You've batteled back before and have beaten the odds,
so I have faith that you will have a strong recovery and come back better
than ever. Don't give up hope on the future because you still have many great
years of baseball left.

God bless you ---

No way Jose! I can't believe you're injured. Any way I just wanted to tell
you that you have been my favorite baseball player ever since I got your
card in a Cracker Jack box in '90...I was 7. McGwire & you should be on
MTV's Fanatic. That would be awesome!(I would be there even if I wasn't
picked).

For goodness sakes, whatever you do PLEASE DON'T RETIRE! The game of baseball just wouldn't be the same without you. It would be an injustice to see you fall short of reaching the 500 home run plateau - A milestone that would no doubt ensure you a place in the Hall of Fame!

Good luck with your recovery. I have no doubt you'll be swinging the bat soon!

Hi Jose: My name is Tom Watson from St. Clair, Michigan. First, I hope you
are well on the road to recovery. Second, I would like to thank you for
signing my life-size cutout of yourself at Skydome on your birthday. Also,
thanks for signing my 89 World Series ball. I gave the cutout to my good
friend, Steve Mack, and the ball is in my personal collection. We were
thrilled to see you hit homerun #29 that night. The news of your back
surgery came as a shock. But please, do not give up. I have been
following your career since 1987, always bragging to my co-workers &
friends when you blasted a homer and taking some jabs when you didn't. But
the ride has been great. You are just 72 big blasts from the hallowed
halls of Cooperstown where your legacy will live on FOREVER!! I have been
planning to attend the ceremony for many years now, so please don't give up
now. Please take it easy and GET WELL SOON!! Your fans are thinking of
you and anxiously awaiting your return. Your #1 fan in Michigan, Tom

Life can bring some real hard knocks, that's true. You've had more than
your share this year. But one thing you've proven over your life in
baseball is that your considerable talent is secnd only to your ability to
come back. You ARE a winner! Hang in their pal. Never loose faith in
yourself and keep faith in God. Together, you can make it.

This is one Rays fan in Ohio (soon to be a Floridian) who can't wait to see
you back in action this September, and for many seasons to come. ON TO 500.

Don't get discouraged, big guy, it does more damage than any broken bone.

Jose, You are an inspiration and a hero to thousands of people.
I am praying that the Lord heals you spiritually and physically.
You are not an unlucky person, even though it may feel that way.
Your talents on the field are not just at swinging the bat, Jose its also the
way you encourage fellow teammates, its the way you may your special charisma
reach from the field to the heart of each fan in the stadium. You have a way
that makes a fan feel like they have a one on one with you. That specialness
then spreads Jose, from teammates to other teammates and from fans to fans.
This is the truly specialness of your talents and you use that everyday whether
you are on the field or off of it.

Years ago I went through some real hard times, and often thought why me Lord why
me, but I continued to trust in him, and on his terms he made everything in my
life right. Don't ever give up Jose. The Lord will continue to use you as a
vessel to help others see the good things in life!

You are a beautiful person inside and out Jose! Thanks also

you smile so nicely for pictures!!!!!! Love you Joseand get well soon!

In 1985 my son who is now a fireman, was only 9 years old and wanted me
to start collecting baseball cards, because he was. I told him that
there were so many players and cards that it was too much to keep up
with. Plus the fact that he was collecting too. He begged me to
collect even if I just picked one player and only collected that
person. Guess who I picked -- Mark McGuire -- I don't think so! I
picked you!! I have at least 50 baseball cards the last time I counted
and have been getting more all the time. I even have one of your
brother Ozzie's baseball cards.

I was really sorry to hear that you were having back problems and had

long and I am praying for you a speedy recovery. Don't let it get you

Here's a relay message from a friend:

Make sure to tell him to get better from me and that 500 ain't that far off
and to open the door to the Hall Of Fame just to look around and never get
in because he gave it all up would be a tragedy. Of course you could
probably word it better than I could. Just tell him not to give up yet...I
still think he'll be able to get 756 HRs and break the all time record.
He's got it in him to do it and I know he can. He's come back before and I
have faith that he can come back again.

The hand surgery in 89, the arm in 93, you've beaten it before Jose. The game needs you. Not many can toss off the witty remarks like you can. You're an incredible person Jose. If I knew you personally, I would be proud to be your acquaintance because you never ever quit. It makes me so mad when people say negative things about you, because they have no idea what you've done to get where you are today. Lesser men would just give up. I live in the Bay Area and remember when you came up in 85. You have a lot of fans still in this area, and we're proud to wear your shirts, jerseys etc, to let others in Oakland realize what they lost (twice!!). Take care Jose, and I hope to see you on the 31st of July.

Jeff Bunnell

P.S. On June 2nd, (cold overcast day game) my wife and I were the ones holding up the sign JOSE: WILL YOU HOLD OUR SON. You gave us a confused look, but acknowledged us. Then you went into the clubhouse(back trouble?) and didn't come out until the game. We wanted you to hold our 1 year old, for a photo. We'll keep trying...

Hope you are feeling better. I'm sure this is a very difficult time for
you. Please keep a positive outlook on things. I just can't imagine baseball

Oakland days) and I have followed your career ever since then. Please try

Jose,
A few days ago I heard that you were considering retirement, and
after hearing that, I struggled to hold back tears. Later that day, I
read that you were going to do your best to return to baseball, and that
made me happier than anything. I have been your #1 fan throughout your
entire career, and nothing thrills me more than seeing you smash a
towering homer into the outfield bleachers (or past them). I'll never
forget being at the game in KC in person when you drove a pitch over the
center field wall for a grand slam. That was the highlight of my life!
Jose, I would love to have the opportunity to watch you do more of the
same. Retiring at the age of 35 just wouldn't be fitting for a great
player as yourself, you have several great years ahead of you. I know
you will come back and be as great as you always have been, and that you
will be remembered as one of the greatest sluggers ever. Just believe
in yourself, and don't ever give up, and things will work out for you.
Good luck Jose, and take care of that back!

Your #1 fan,

Subject: Do Not Apologize to Me!

Hey Jose -

Please don't think for even a minute that you ever have
to apologize to your fans for missing the All-Star game.
A disapointment? Of course. Rather have had you there? No
question! Your fault? No way! Unlucky? Hmmm...

The message I really want you to take with you is this...
You have had an amazing life from the day you were born.
Yes, God gave you the talent to be a great baseball
player. He also gave you many other tools. He blessed
you with wonderful parents, tremendous courage, a great
(albeit dry) sense of humor, and a heart as big as all of
outdoors. He gave you wisdom, and generosity and the
ability to nurture a beautiful daughter. Unlucky? Many a
boy dreams of hitting the long ball in the major leagues,
you are one of the few whose dream came true.

George Brett said the other day that most boys dream of
becoming a baseball player. And most baseball players
dream of being elected to Cooperstown. He finished by
stating that he felt very humbled that all of his dreams
have come true.

I am sure that you, too, will feel that humility one day.
But not today. Today is a day for rejuvenation and
rehabilitation. You will work hard and you will return.

And your prayers will be answered. Get Well Soon.

Your friend,

Terri Sherron

I hope that have a very fast recovery. I have idolized you ever since I
have been watching baseball, which was about 1988. I REALLY do hope that you
get back to your old self soon. About a month and a half ago, me and my

Hi, Jose,
What a shock to you, and also to all of your fans, when you were
sidelined once again for surgery! Talk about poor timing- I think the
good Lord has an occasionally warped sense of humor (...hey, let's see
how Jose handles this curve ball...). My husband, my son and I have
followed your career faithfully for over a decade. Even my 4 yr. old
granddaughter sings a mean rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, and
she knows which player is her Nana's favorite!
Please realize that you do have so many friends wishing you well and
hoping that you return to the game you love as soon as you possibly can.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Hang in there, and we hope to
see you back in uniform soon. (Until then, we probably won't even watch

Mr. Canseco,

My name is Brendan Hughes and I'm 15 years old. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I've loved you ever since you played with the A's in 85. You are my hero and have inspired me to try no matter how hard things get. I broke my right arm playing baseball and when I couldn't play I watched you recover from a serous groin pull and then switch teams over and over again but you never gave up. That day we moved into a new neighborhood and went outside and learned how to bat with only my left hand. That summer I played for a new team and did great thanks to you for gving me inspiration to get out and practice even though I moved and was hurt. When you come to Jacobs Field I try to see every game of yours and one time I even got your homerun ball. I want to wish you the best of luck on your recovery and I beg you not to retire! You still have a few good seasons left and who knows, you could even reach 60 home runs. Just don't give up! Thank you so much for taking your time to read this letter.

Sincerely,
Brendan Hughes

I had quit watching baseball over the past few seasons but had always
kept up with Jose's stats. I had been a big fan back in the 80's but
had lost interest in the game itself in the 90's, except for my favorite
player...Jose. This 1999 season was my return to being a fan of the
sport and I owe that to Jose. I miss checking ESPN's "sportscenter" and
"canseconet.com" every day to get Jose's stats. If I could get a
message to Jose it would be simply this...I hope you are able to recover
100% from your recent surgery so I can continue to watch you play, that
is kind of selfish on my part, but if it is time for you to retire, I
hope you do it because Jose thinks it is time and not because doctors

Jose,
I have been wondering for a long time, how long you
can keep swinging that hard without something giving.
I got to see you play here in Toronto last season, and
it was something I would never have missed.
On July 2nd, my friend Julie and I sat over the Jays
dugout in anticipation of seeing you hit. I noticed
you weren't stretching or doing much standing in the
dugout, things I was used to seeing you do. I
mentioned to friends after the game, I had a bad
feeling. I hate it when I am right.
I know this was not a good time, no time for this is.
You might get the best results from this. I expect you
might come back stronger and with more determination.
You have always persevered over injury, this time is
no different. I know you can not perceive what will
happen down the road, but don't push the come back to
soon. It will happen soon enough.
Don't worry about next season, some club will sign
you. The G.M in Toronto has taken alot of flack for
not resigning you at the time, and even with your
injury still is.
All the best for a full recovery,

Since Spring Training '95 when I saw you smash almost every ball out of

time, I was only 13, but I had been raised on baseball and knew talent
when I saw it. I returned every year just to see you while you were with
the A's. I followed you from team to team and through all of the hard
times and knew you would get through them, just like I know you'll get
through this one. You have not let anything keep you down for long, so
to consider retirement is to consider defeat. I, as well as the rest of
your fans, am not ready to see one of the greatest players leave
baseball. It just won't be fun anymore. We know you will recover from

Jose,
To my favorite player: Get well, Think positive and Believe. You will be
back out there in the field in better shape than you ever imagined.
Things may seem down, but that is when you need to be strong and pick
yourself up. You may not feel like you have the strength, so turn to your
family, friends and fans. We'll always be there for you.

out there looks as good as you do swinging that bat!   I've been a fan of
yours since way back with the A's.  See you next year in GREAT shape ok?

Jose - I live in Illinois and have not been able to follow your career too
closely. I do remember trading baseball cards of you and Mark when you
guys played for the A's during the 80's. You have always contributed to
your team and have brought a great deal to the game of baseball. Though I
am ultimately a Cubs and BoSox fan, I love baseball and I appreciate what
you bring to it. I have no doubt that your desire is to return to the
Devil Rays, perhaps even this year??? I was randomly given you on my
fantasy team this year so my stats took a big blow when you went down.
Beyond that, I am disappointed because you were off to such a great start
and like Sammy and Mark last year, I was just anxious to see what you would
do with a full season of health. I can't imagine the pain involved in back
surgery and I hope you heal quickly... for your comfort and the comfort of
your family. We have been privileged to watch you perform for several
years, but you don't belong to the fans, you belong to your family. I hope
you get well for them, if you can come back and play a bit more, praise
God, if not praise God, you have given a lot to the game, if you have to
walk away now, I pray you will do so contentedly, peacefully, and thankful
for a mighty career!

Jose,

My name is Tony Davis; I am from Uniontown, PA. You have been my favorite ball player ever since I became interested in baseball (1987). I know everything about your professional career. When I was younger I would pretend that I was you (even through the bad years); simply because you were the best and in my mind still are. Whenever you were elected to the all-star game this year I was elated. You deserved it more then anyone; and not only that it shut up everyone who doubted your abilities. When I learned of your injury I was in disarray. It just don't seem fair that it happened ; especially with the year you were having. The main reason I am writing is to congratulate you for everything that you accomplished in your career, and to wish you good luck with your recovery. I hope that everything goes well. I will be watching your interview on ESPN (WED.July28) and looking forward to seeing you on the hi-light reels. GOOD LUCK!!

Wishing you well,
Tony Davis

Jose,
Back in 1996 I also had a lumbar discectomy on my L4/5. The
Orthopedic Surgeon told me that because of my physical condition ( I was able
to bench press in the low 300's, run 7:00 miles for a ten K & had a body fat
count of around 6 - 7%)
my recovery should be uneventful. I did everything I was told to do & got
myself back to as near as normal as I was before surgery. Approximately 5
weeks ago I was at the golf course on the 1st hole, pulled out my driver, and
proceeded to rupture the other side of my L4/5. Undoubtably it was my fault
for not streching & warming up.
What I am trying to express to you is that you must be ULTRA careful
in how you proceed in the future in regards to your profession. A player of
your status comes around too few in between. Do everything your therapists
say, be conscious of your back & stay around the league for many more years
to come.

Good luck!

Subject: Know that He's in control

Dear Jose,

On the back of a baseball card years ago, you listed Jesus Christ as "the
person I'd most like to meet." That statement awakened in me a much more
personal interest in you than what you did on a baseball field. I had always checked the box
scores for your name first, bought the magazines and newspapers highlighting
your achieve-ments, picked you in every fantasy baseball league in which I
became involved, collected every card, and derived a great deal of enjoyment
from your career. But then, I was movingly reminded of the fact that you were
a human being who yet needed to know his Maker. I hoped from the start that
your answer to the card com-pany's question was not a flippant toss-away, but
that it revealed your seeking soul. I've since asked God to bless you with
that saving knowledge of your sole Savior, Jesus Christ. Do you now know Him?
If so, you have the very words of the eternal God to comfort you-- in the
Bible. Not only will you find comfort, encouragement, and peace there, but
most importantly, you will know to whom all glory, honor, thanks, and praise
belongs. You will find freedom in your dependence on Him alone. He made you,
He's given you all of your abilities and successes, every breath, and every
good thing, including what appears to be evil (Rom. 8:28). Know that only He
can grant healing; know that He is in absolute control. Get to know him now,
while He's com-manding your attention. I firmly believe this is what He wants
you to do, without delay. He's set this in your path for His specific
purpose; He does all things likewise. Then, when you understand in Whom you
live, and move, and have your being, you will be completely sound in heart,
mind, body, and soul. You will have received your Lord and your reason for
existence: we are all made for His glory.

I personally believe that you will recover your health quickly; that you will
finish the year with a flourish, maybe even win Comeback Player honors for your season-
within-a-season accomplishments; that you will go on well past 500 home runs;
and that your legions of fans will witness your induction into the Hall of Fame.
I believe that all of this will take place, not because you are "lucky," after all, but
because you will come to know that the living King, Who has loved His children with an
everlasting love through His Son, sovereignly directs all of your steps for your eternal
well-being. I believe that you will, like Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, and
so many others, give public thanks to your Lord on induction day at
Cooperstown.

Friend, I hurt along with you; I became heartsick at the news of your severe
pain and disappointment. But know now that everything happens according to God's will,
and that there are no accidents. When you can see that, you will find purpose and
peace. Heed God's call, seek His will, and I'm quite certain that Cooperstown will
call as well.

Psalm 115:1,
One of many who prays for you
